Anthony Russo, co-director of the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ has spoken about the inherent challenges in developing iconic Marvel superheroes while maintaining their established legacy. Speaking during a Q&A session following a screening of ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ Russo admitted that finding the right balance between advancing the narrative and honoring the source material is a complex task.
‘It’s a very difficult part of the process because, I mean, we basically just have to use our own meters because we love the characters, we love the history, we love them in the same way that many fans do,’ Russo explained. He emphasized that the fandom is not monolithic, noting that audiences hold a wide variety of opinions regarding which versions of characters resonate with them most.
Russo, who co-directs the film with his brother Joe, stated that while they hold deep respect for the storytelling journey these characters have undergone, they also feel compelled to push boundaries. ‘But at the same time, we need to surprise ourselves in terms of who those characters are, where they can go, what they can do, what can happen, and in doing that, we hopefully surprise audiences as well,’ he said.
These comments follow the release of a trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ that depicted a significantly more serious iteration of Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth. This portrayal contrasts sharply with the tone of 2022’s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder,’ which was directed by Taika Waititi and ultimately divided fans. While the film was a box office success, some viewers felt the character had become too lighthearted, a sentiment Hemsworth himself has previously acknowledged.
Regarding production updates, Russo revealed that the full cast list for the film remains incomplete. ‘The cast is so large, and we’ve announced some of the cast, and we haven’t announced some of the cast,’ Russo said, joking that he occasionally loses track of announcements himself. Confirmed cast members to date include Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, and Tom Hiddleston.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 18.
I’m skeptical about the tonal shift from Love and Thunder, but RDJ and Evans returning is huge news!
With that massive cast, I hope they don’t rush character development. It’s easy to crowd out the story with cameos.
Honestly, the more serious Thor trailer looks amazing. Finally, a return to form after the comedy overload!
