Russia Launches Deadly Overnight Strike on Ukrainian Civilian Targets

LONDON — Russian forces conducted a large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine, striking residential buildings and energy infrastructure across at least 12 regions, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attack, described by Kyiv as “vile” and deadly, involved dozens of missiles and drones.

Zelenskyy reported that Russia fired approximately 70 missiles, including a significant number of ballistic projectiles, alongside attack drones. He identified Ukraine’s energy grid as a primary objective, stating, “The Russians wanted to strike painfully and demonstratively.” In response, Russia’s Ministry of Defense characterized the operation as a “massive strike” aimed at defense industries in Kyiv and other urban centers.

The bombing resulted in at least nine deaths and 26 injuries. Zelenskyy confirmed that a missile hit a five-story apartment building in Pryluky, located in the Chernihiv region, killing five people, including five children. Emergency responders remain on-site conducting search and rescue operations.

Additional casualties were reported in other cities. Two people were injured when missiles struck high-rises in Kremenchuk and apartment complexes in Dnipro. Two more fatalities were recorded in Kyiv, while two others died in Oleksandriya. Zelenskyy emphasized that first responders are working continuously to locate all individuals trapped in the rubble.

  1. Does anyone else think the term ‘defense industries’ is becoming a convenient code word for residential blocks? The math doesn’t add up.

  2. Five children killed is simply unthinkable. How does any government justify targeting civilians like this?
