Russell Holds Off Verstappen for Dramatic Baku Victory

George Russell claimed victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday, holding off a spirited late challenge from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in a race that ended with one of the closest finishes in recent Formula 1 history. The win marks Russell’s first success on the podium since the Austrian Grand Prix in June.

The British driver dominated the early stages, building a comfortable lead before the race was turned on its head by two consecutive safety car periods. These interventions allowed Verstappen, who had mounted a strong comeback from an eighth-place grid start, to close the gap significantly.

While Verstappen stayed within roughly half a second of Russell for the final eleven laps, he could never get close enough to attempt a pass through Turn One, the circuit’s only viable overtaking zone. Russell crossed the line just 0.196 seconds ahead, marking the closest green-flag finish since the 2002 United States Grand Prix.

The race featured significant mid-day drama following the first safety car restart. As Verstappen moved into second place, a multi-car incident occurred at the first corner. Alpine’s Franco Colapinto collided with teammate Pierre Gasly, who then struck McLaren’s Lando Norris. The collision also involved the two Racing Bulls, with Arvid Lindblad making contact with Liam Lawson, who responded with a sarcastic remark over the radio. Norris was forced to retire from the event.

Mclaren had shown promise early on, with Oscar Piastri advancing to second place after passing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc at the start. However, the team’s fortunes unraveled following the chaos. Isack Hadjar had also displaced Leclerc and challenged Piastri before the incident.

For Russell, the victory came after dealing with technical issues, including a turbo failure that cost him electrical boost on the final lap, which initially raised fears he would be unable to resist the Red Bull’s pursuit. He credited his team for their continued belief during a difficult period.

The result also impacts the championship standings. Teammate Kimi Antonelli recovered from 16th place to finish fifth, narrowing the points gap between the two drivers to 66 points.
