Rome Cracks Down on Golf Cart Tours as Locals Protest Intrusion

Roman officials have initiated a crackdown on golf cart tour operators, citing concerns that the business poses significant risks to public safety and urban order. The move comes amid growing frustration from local residents who argue that the vehicles are creating hazards in crowded pedestrian zones.

Operators of the tours contend that they are being singled out unfairly by the new regulations. Despite the tension, visitors from Texas, Barry and Linda, were observed stepping out of their golf cart near Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s most prominent central squares. Their plan was to explore the area on foot, admire Lorenzo Bernini’s 17th-century Fountain of the Four Rivers, and reunite with their driver at a different location.

The couple’s decision to walk rather than drive through the historic center stemmed from earlier exhaustion during their trip. After completing a walking tour on their first day, they endured a three-hour trek through congested corridors leading to the Sistine Chapel on the second day. By their third day, they opted for a more relaxed approach, seeking respite for their tired feet.

This incident highlights the broader debate between tourism convenience and the preservation of pedestrian-friendly spaces in Rome’s historic core. While some tourists appreciate the ease of golf cart transportation, locals and authorities are increasingly focused on maintaining the integrity and safety of iconic public squares.

  1. Do they actually respect the new rules or just keep driving through pedestrian zones? I see them daily.
