Rocket Lab successfully sent a mystery mission to orbit Thursday night, lifting off from its launch site in New Zealand at 11:28 p.m. EDT (0328 GMT). The company designated the flight “Happily Ever Faster,” providing minimal details about the payload or its customer.
According to the company’s announcement on X, the Electron rocket deployed a single Earth-observation satellite into a 500-kilometer low Earth orbit (LEO) for a confidential client. The mission, identified as Rocket Lab’s 95th Electron launch, marked the firm’s 16th mission of 2026 and maintained a perfect record with 100% success.
Rocket Lab did not broadcast the launch live nor disclose the identity of the entity that booked the flight. The satellite was confirmed to be an Earth-observing craft approximately 80 minutes after liftoff.
While official details remain scarce, industry speculation has emerged regarding the payload’s origin. Some observers believe the mission may have carried a “Gen-3” satellite for BlackSky, a geospatial intelligence provider. These advanced sensors are capable of resolving objects as small as 14 inches (35 centimeters) on the ground. Rocket Lab has previously launched BlackSky Gen-3 spacecraft, lending credibility to the theory, particularly given the confirmed nature of the payload as an Earth observer.
This launch represents the 13th time this year that Rocket Lab utilized its 59-foot-tall (18-meter) Electron vehicle to provide dedicated rides for small satellites. Additionally, the company has conducted three suborbital HASTE missions in 2026, which test customer equipment in hypersonic flight conditions. With this latest deployment, Rocket Lab has now completed 16 successful launches this year without a single failure.
