Prime Video has cancelled the buddy dramedy Ride or Die following one season, Variety has confirmed.
The series, which premiered in July, stars Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham as former best friends whose lives collide when one is revealed to be an international assassin. The storyline was originally reported in December 2023, when the pairing of the two actors was first announced.
According to the show’s official synopsis, the plot follows Debbie Claybourne (Spencer) and Judith Burton (Waddingham), who discover that Judith leads a secret life as a hitwoman. When a hit from her past goes awry and a mysterious figure resurfaces, the pair are forced to flee across Europe while evading law enforcement and dangerous criminals.
In a review of the inaugural season, Variety’s Aramide Tinubu praised the dynamic between the leads, noting that the show shines when it embraces its Thelma & Louise-inspired premise. Tinubu highlighted the authentic chemistry between Spencer and Waddingham and praised Waddingham’s performance as an action star.
The supporting cast features Ed Skrein, Calam Lynch, Savannah Steyn, Jamie Parker, Jacky Ido, Sylvia Hoeks, and Bill Nighy.
Tessa Coates created the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Matt Miller and director Peyton Reed. Production was handled by Paramount Television Studios, Amazon MGM Studios, Double Dream, and Octavia Spencer’s Orit Entertainment.
Thelma & Louise with assassins? That’s a solid pitch. Pity the ratings didn’t hold up. Hope the actresses get better projects soon.
Wait, Bill Nighy was in this? I missed it completely. Was the action actually any good, or just dialogue-heavy?
Such a shame. The chemistry between Spencer and Waddingham was genuinely delightful. Why do streamers kill good shows so fast?
