The Labour party characterized the remark as “straightforward racism” after Yusuf implied the Camden council leader was not British.
Abdi-Wali, who arrived in the UK as a child refugee from Somalia, is currently viewed as a leading candidate to succeed Keir Starmer as the Labour contender in the upcoming Holborn and St Pancras byelection.
Questioning someone’s Britishness just because of their background is textbook racism. The Labour response seems entirely justified here.
