Rayner Warns Reform UK £72m Donations May Fall Under New Retrospective Legislation

A cabinet minister has indicated that Reform UK may face scrutiny over £72million in donations received from two cryptocurrency billionaires under upcoming legislation that carries retrospective provisions. Angela Rayner pointed to the potential legal implications, suggesting the new bill could cover the contributions.

The potential application of retroactive measures follows a weekend donation spike from donors Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo, which brought the total from these two sources to £72million. This influx has sparked frustration among Labour MPs, who have expressed anger on private WhatsApp groups that the government failed to act sooner to restrict domestic donations within the elections bill.

Despite the minister’s comments, Reform UK has maintained confidence that its funding sources remain fully compliant with existing laws. The dispute highlights growing tensions regarding electoral finance regulations and the influence of wealthy donors in UK politics.
