Rare David Hockney Painting of Dachshund Stanley Heads to Auction

A unique painting from David Hockney’s celebrated series depicting his beloved dachshunds is set to be auctioned by Christie’s, with estimates suggesting it could reach £2.5 million. The artwork, titled Dog Painting 17, features Stanley and is believed to be among just six pieces from the series currently held in private collections.

Hockney, known for his deep affection for his pets Stanley and Boodgie, frequently included them in his artistic output. Anecdotes from his time in Los Angeles reveal his casual attitude toward their presence; after one of the dogs had an accident in actor Dennis Hopper’s home, the painter reportedly joked that the mess would dry overnight and could simply be picked up.

This upcoming sale marks a significant moment for collectors, as it is the first work from Hockney’s Dog Series to be offered at auction. The piece highlights the artist’s tendency to treat his four-legged companions as serious portrait subjects rather than mere muses.

  1. This is wild. Can anyone explain why there are only six private pieces left? Shouldn’t there be more from a series?

  2. It’s fascinating how he treats them as serious subjects, not just pets. The Dennis Hopper anecdote is hilarious though.
