The Los Angeles Rams responded forcefully to their lackluster season-opening defeat in Australia, dismantling the New York Giants 28-6 on Monday night. Super Bowl contenders Stafford and Adams led the charge, while the team also celebrated the long-awaited return of Aaron Donald to the NFL after a 32-month absence.
Stafford completed a vintage performance, throwing for 327 yards and four touchdown passes. His primary target, Davante Adams, was unstoppable, hauling in eight catches for 195 yards and two scores. The offensive explosion came shortly after the Giants suffered a significant blow when rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart exited early due to a left knee injury.
The Rams (1-1) improved their record while the Giants (1-1) fell to .500 after failing to capitalize on home-field advantage. New York’s struggles were compounded by the loss of Dart, who left on their first offensive series after absorbing a heavy hit from Byron Young and Josaiah Stewart. Jameis Winston replaced him, going 11 of 27 for 111 yards and an interception.
For Los Angeles, the night marked a personal milestone for Stafford, who moved into sixth place on the NFL’s all-time touchdown pass list with his 426th career mark. Adams’ stat line represented his best receiving output since joining the Rams, highlighted by a spectacular 31-yard touchdown catch on the team’s second possession and a crucial 64-yard gain that set up Kyren Williams’ 10-yard score.
Aaron Donald, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, earned enthusiastic cheers from the home crowd in his first appearance since Week 1. Although he recorded only three tackles, his presence was felt throughout the game, including a pivotal third-down stop against Najee Harris just before halftime. That play led to a fumble recovery by Jevon Holland at the Los Angeles 11-yard line, ending New York’s hopes of a comeback before the break.
Despite overcoming two turnovers, the Rams outgained the Giants 481 yards to 182. Stafford sealed the victory with a touchdown pass to Terrance Ferguson with under nine minutes remaining.
“This team got to the confidence level we’re at because of the work we put in,” Adams said after the game. “If you’re trying to be great, be a Super Bowl-calibre team, you’ve got to hold yourself to a high standard. We can do even better, but this is on track with what we’re capable of.”
Giants head coach John Harbaugh did not confirm the severity of Dart’s injury but hinted at a ligament issue, stating it is “in the neighbourhood of it.” He was critical of his team’s overall performance. “As a group, we just didn’t do what we needed to do to even have a chance to win the game,” Harbaugh admitted.
