Apple’s recent product launch, which unveiled its first folding phone to global headlines, concealed a significant financial shift for consumers: a £100 price increase across all iPhone models, including older iterations.
The surge in cost is attributed to a phenomenon dubbed “RAMageddon,” which has effectively reversed a long-standing trend of electronics becoming more affordable. This inflation stems from the AI gold rush, where massive datacentres are consuming every available memory chip to support growing computational needs.
Consequently, manufacturers face a critical shortage of these chips alongside other essential components required for producing smartphones and other consumer electronics.
