RAI Secures Female-Led Slate from Beta Film Ahead of Mipcom

Italy’s state-run broadcaster RAI has finalized a deal with Beta Film to acquire a slate of high-profile, female-led drama series ahead of the upcoming Mipcom market. The package includes a Canadian-American procedural, a French thriller, and a German period piece, all centering on women’s narratives.

Among the titles is “Barton Vet,” a 12-episode series about a veterinarian who inherits her father’s rural clinic and leads a family-run team in saving animals. Starring Georgina Reilly, the show also features Katia Edith Wood, Nadeem Umar-Khitab, and Sonja Smits. Produced by Shaftesbury in association with BYUtv, the project was directed by Felipe Rodriguez.

Also included in the acquisition is the four-part French thriller “A Guilty Affair.” The story follows Morgane, a high school principal desperate to find her missing daughter, suspecting a new physical education teacher may be involved. Helene De Fougerolles leads the cast, with direction by Sandra Perrin. The series is a co-production involving France Télévisions, Episode Productions, Be-Films, and RTBF.

Rounding out the deal is “Mozart Mozart,” a six-episode German period drama that reimagines the life of Maria Anna Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus’s equally talented but overlooked sister. In the series, she secretly assumes her brother’s identity after his behavior endangers the family. Havana Joy Josephine Braun and Eren M. Güvercin star in the production by Story House Pictures, in association with ARD, ORF, and Dreaming Sheep Company.

Industry observers note that the deals underscore the enduring influence of public broadcasters in Europe. Despite tightening budgets, networks like RAI, France Télévisions, and ARD continue to drive significant order volumes for co-produced content. Beta Film handles international sales for “Barton Vet” and “A Guilty Affair,” while Bavaria Media shares sales duties for “Mozart Mozart.”

  1. It’s impressive public broadcasters still fund co-productions like this despite budget cuts. Who’s next?
