India’s primary opposition figure, Rahul Gandhi, has publicly endorsed student demonstrations in Maharashtra concerning suspected irregularities in a state recruitment examination. Gandhi argued that the unrest signifies a broader collapse of confidence in public institutions rather than a dispute over a single test.
“Thousands of students are on the streets, protesting peacefully — the reason isn’t just one exam or recruitment, but a trust that’s been shattered by the entire system,” Gandhi stated on the social media platform X. He urged authorities to address the protesters’ grievances, warning that the movement would intensify until justice is achieved.
The demonstrations follow allegations of a paper leak in the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) Food and Drug Administration exam for Drug Inspector positions. The offline test, administered on March 22, faced claims that certain candidates obtained questions prior to the exam. Although the MPSC initially published a merit list of 488 individuals, it subsequently annulled the recruitment process after a police investigation suggested a candidate had accessed the paper beforehand.
On Saturday, the state government established a high-level committee to evaluate the current recruitment framework. The body will recommend reforms to enhance transparency, security, and reliability in screening processes across Maharashtra, the country’s second-most populous state.
Gandhi also criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which governs Maharashtra, linking the exam scandal to wider issues such as stalled recruitments and poor hostel conditions. These comments follow earlier protests by tribal students, who recently concluded a hunger strike after the government accepted their demands regarding hostel safety and vacancies reserved for tribal communities.
The current unrest echoes the “Cockroach Movement” in July, where Generation Z activists demanded comprehensive examination reforms, leading to the resignation of the education minister at that time.
