Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani has called on nations to uphold state sovereignty as a prerequisite for Middle Eastern security, cautioning against repeated cycles of escalation following what he described as an “earthquake” triggered by the US-Israeli war on Iran.
Speaking on Sunday at a United Nations General Assembly-adjacent event during the Qatar Economic Forum in New York City, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that the region requires a framework where no state poses a threat to another. He also serves as Qatar’s foreign minister.
The prime minister characterized the economic repercussions of the conflict as seismic, with shock waves extending well beyond the Middle East and challenging established notions of regional stability. He noted that discussions during the crisis consistently revolved around security, de-escalation, energy supplies, and shipping routes, reflecting a broader question about what remains reliable amid such disruption.
While asserting that Qatar has withstood tests to the foundations of its economy and security, Sheikh Mohammed acknowledged the ongoing conflict’s impact on the region. Additionally, the prime minister announced a domestic strategic shift, pledging more than $38 billion in infrastructure investments over the next five years.
