A Qantas Airbus A330 flying from Queenstown to Sydney was rerouted on Saturday afternoon after an engine malfunction caused visible flames, prompting an emergency landing at Sydney Airport.
Liza-Jayne Loch, a passenger on board, reported that the aircraft was climbing over the South Island’s mountainous terrain when a loud bang resonated through the cabin. Moments later, cabin lights flickered, leading to reports of chaos and screaming among travelers.
The pilot made an announcement confirming an issue with one of the engines but assured passengers that the situation was under control. The flight successfully landed safely in Sydney with no injuries reported.
Qantas has launched an investigation into the incident as part of its routine safety protocols.
