DUBLIN — A Republic of Ireland FIFA Nations League match against Austria was disrupted by pro-Palestine protests on Wednesday, ending in a 2-2 draw after Ireland blew a two-goal lead.
The fixture at the Aviva Stadium was halted twice during the first half despite a heavy security presence. Around the 20th minute, activists from the campaign group Stop the Game launched tennis balls wrapped in stickers bearing the Palestinian flag and the hashtag “#StopTheGame” onto the pitch. The group later described the incident as a “limited tennis ball protest.”
Austria, who had trailed 2-0 at halftime, mounted a strong second-half comeback to secure a point. The interruptions highlighted the growing tension between football authorities and activist groups using high-profile sporting events to draw attention to the conflict in Gaza.
Security needs to step up. Two interruptions in one half is unacceptable for an international fixture.
Does this actually help Palestine? Feels more like a stunt to gain media attention for Stop the Game.
Austria’s comeback was incredible, honestly forgot about the protests for a moment. 2-2 was a fair result in the end.
I respect the cause, but disrupting a live match feels like punishing innocent fans who just wanted to watch sport.
Disappointing that the players had to endure that. Football is supposed to bring people together, not divide them further.
