Portugal’s national football federation confirmed on Saturday that it has initiated disciplinary proceedings against star forward Cristiano Ronaldo, resulting in a provisional suspension for leaving the squad last month. The governing body classified the case as urgent and stated the 41-year-old remains suspended while authorities determine the appropriate final penalty.
The controversy began on September 27 during a Nations League fixture against Norway, when Ronaldo was listed as a substitute but failed to enter the match. He subsequently walked out of camp after learning he would not start in the following game against Denmark on October 1.
Ronaldo, who recently returned to club football with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, addressed the situation earlier this week. He offered an apology to fans and criticized national team manager Jorge Jesus, accusing the coach of breaking promises regarding his playing time. Despite the conflict, Ronaldo emphasized that he does not intend to retire from international duty and remains ready to compete once any sanctions are served.
The Portuguese national team has maintained a perfect record in the current Nations League campaign, winning all four matches to secure qualification for the quarter-finals with two games remaining.
This suspension actually helps Portugal. They are winning without him. Good riddance.
Doesn’t sound like a broken promise from Jesus, more like Ronaldo can’t accept he’s no longer the untouchable star.
I didn’t know he was still playing for Portugal at this age! The sheer stubbornness is remarkable.
A 41-year-old refusing to come off the bench speaks volumes about where his priorities lie now.
