Support for California’s proposed Proposition 40 has fallen below the majority threshold among registered voters, according to a new poll released Monday.
The survey, conducted by the University of California, Berkeley Citrin Center for Public Opinion Research in partnership with POLITICO, found that just 45% of California voters currently back the measure. Proposition 40 seeks to impose a 5% tax on the net worth of the state’s 200 wealthiest individuals.
The drop in enthusiasm signals a potential challenge for advocates of the billionaire tax, which aims to generate significant revenue from the state’s top earners. As the November election approaches, the declining numbers may intensify debates over the feasibility and public appetite for such a sweeping fiscal policy change.
