He argued that eastern members such as Poland are more likely to require Article 5 protections than western nations like Portugal or Ireland due to their geographic proximity to the conflict.
These remarks followed a week of airspace violations along NATO’s eastern flank, including a Russian drone striking a Ukrainian passenger train near the Polish border and another drone carrying a warhead retrieved off Poland’s coast. NATO jets also intercepted a drone in Lithuania earlier in the week. While Russia’s Foreign Ministry has dismissed these accusations as “contrived,” European nations are increasingly characterizing these events as part of a coordinated hybrid warfare campaign.
Shortly after Tusk’s speech, President Donald Trump announced on social media that progress had been made toward establishing a permanent U.S. Army base in Poland, replacing the current rotational troop deployment. Tusk concluded his address by calling for unity and a resolute defense commitment from NATO members.
