Jackson police announced on Tuesday that they have taken a second suspect into custody regarding the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black woman whose body was discovered hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home on August 3. The arrest of 25-year-old Earnest Lloyd Jr. follows the September detention of 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff, who is currently held without bond after pleading not guilty to murder charges.
Authorities also confirmed that an arrest warrant has been issued for a third individual, though no identifying details or specific allegations against this person were released. Police Chief RaShall Brackney indicated that additional warrants may follow as the investigation continues.
Lloyd appeared in a brief hearing on Wednesday in Jackson. His mother’s relative, Christy Spivey, attended the proceedings and expressed relief that arrests had been made. However, Spivey noted that neither she nor Fortune’s close friends recognized Lloyd. She reminded the public that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty and acknowledged the impact the case has on the families of those accused.
“My family is not the only family that this is affecting,” Spivey said. “I feel for them as well. The only difference is that mine can never come back.” She added, “I’ll never truly have peace,” reflecting the ongoing grief surrounding her daughter’s death.
The manner of Fortune’s death has drawn significant public attention due to its resemblance to historical lynchings in the American South. While police have not identified a motive or suggested that racial hatred played a role, the case has prompted scrutiny similar to two other hanging deaths in Mississippi over the past year: the 2025 death of Trey Reed, a Black Delta State University student, and Cory Zukatis, an unhoused white man in Vicksburg. Both previous cases were ruled suicides, though Reed’s family has demanded an independent autopsy.
Relatives describe Fortune as a Kentucky native who had lived in Jackson for approximately a decade and was a mother of four. Spivey stated that her daughter had recently struggled with homelessness but was attempting to rebuild her life, including discussing plans to start a cleaning business. “Still don’t have a lot of answers,” Spivey said earlier this month regarding the circumstances of Fortune’s death.
Following Ratliff’s initial arrest, Chief Brackney mentioned that the suspect had an “association” with Fortune but did not provide further elaboration. Investigators report having interviewed more than a dozen witnesses and collected forensic evidence in connection with the case.
Why hasn’t the motive been released? Four children lost their mother. We deserve answers beyond ‘association.’
This case is haunting given the historical parallels to lynching. The community needs more than just arrests; they need truth and accountability.
