Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk disclosed on Thursday that intelligence assessments suggest Russia is preparing to launch drone and missile attacks targeting countries that support Ukraine, with Poland specifically named as a potential target. Speaking to parliament, Tusk argued that these operations are designed to undermine NATO’s capacity for a unified response.
“According to intelligence assessments, Russia’s plan … includes hybrid drone and missile strikes against countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland,” Tusk stated. He characterized the anticipated attacks as likely being of an “accidental” nature, aimed at paralyzing or diminishing the political will of NATO member states to activate collective defense provisions under Article 5 in the event of aggression against a member.
The Polish leader did not specify which intelligence services provided the warning. However, European nations have increasingly suspected Moscow of orchestrating recent acts of sabotage, particularly within Germany, as part of a broader strategy to pressure Kyiv’s allies. The Kremlin has consistently denied involvement in such activities.
Tusk also cautioned that these military provocations could align with electoral shifts in certain European nations. He implied that the rise of Russia-friendly political movements, such as Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) and France’s National Rally, could lead to leaders invoking rhetoric around peace and pacifism to advocate for Ukraine’s total capitulation rather than a negotiated settlement.
The statement came amid heightened tensions along the border. Earlier on Thursday, Poland scrambled military aircraft after a Russian attack occurred in western Ukraine near the Polish frontier. Airports in Rzeszow and Lublin were temporarily closed, and air raid sirens prompted schoolchildren in two eastern regions to seek shelter. Tusk noted that a petrol station near Dorohusk was likely struck during the incident.
Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that Poland is bolstering its airspace defenses, increasing F-16 and helicopter patrols, and reinforcing rapid response systems. This follows a separate incident on Sunday when a Russian drone hit a passenger train in Ukraine approximately two kilometers from the border.
Tusk announced plans to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday to discuss cooperation within the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition. This group of European nations is developing an air defense system with Ukraine, offering a more cost-effective alternative to the US-manufactured Patriot missile system.
