The Pentagon has selected Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to lead a new initiative aimed at identifying the military capabilities, technologies, and weapons systems the United States will require for future conflicts. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made the announcement on Wednesday.
Titled Project Meridian, the initiative will span 120 days. It is designed to look years and decades into the future to analyze how warfare may evolve and what skills the U.S. military must master to preserve its technological advantage.
Speaking at the State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, Hegseth emphasized that the project is not focused on crafting new strategies or policies. Instead, he stated that its core mission is to determine the domains the military must conquer and the capabilities it must master.
Musk, who serves as CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, joins Luckey, a defense technology entrepreneur and co-founder of Anduril, and Gingrich in the effort. Hegseth delivered the address to an audience that included junior officers, enlisted leaders, and special guests.
