In a recent cover concept for WIRED, comedian Patti Harrison channels the absurdity of Silicon Valley’s most powerful figures, mocking Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos—alongside his partner, Lauren Sánchez Bezos. The piece highlights the man-heavy leadership culture of the tech industry through Harrison’s farcical lens, drawing on her reputation for shifting from demure to deranged performances, as seen in her work on I Think You Should Leave and Hulu’s Shrill.
The interview took place in London, following Harrison’s sold-out run of her solo show, Just Ironing Some Things Out!, and a week of performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. When asked about the decision to feature her on the cover, Harrison jokingly expressed initial anxiety that the conversation might turn into an ambush or a transphobic takedown forcing her to define womanhood. Instead, she found the experience affirming.
Editor Katie Drummond admitted that Harrison’s humor was the primary qualification for the cover, noting that her transgender identity was not part of the initial selection criteria. Harrison, who has been open about being transgender, explained that she does not frequently center her trans identity in her comedy, preferring to leave it nebulous unless it is central to the joke or content.
Discussing the intersection of politics and comedy, Harrison acknowledged the pressure to incorporate political discourse into her work. She argued that while social media allows for unrestricted access to information, the platforms themselves have become monopolized, effectively corralling users into silos where speech is heavily censored. She noted the challenge of balancing absurd humor—such as jokes about bodily functions or kissing dogs—with the unavoidable realities of the current social climate.
