OpenAI Employee Arrested for Planting Surveillance Device in Office

OpenAI announced on Tuesday that a “sophisticated recording device” was discovered hidden within one of its office spaces, prompting an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The company stated that an employee planted the device just days before its discovery and has since been terminated.

The Department of Justice confirmed that Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old national of Saudi Arabia, was arrested on October 9. According to a post on X, the FBI acted swiftly to apprehend the suspect following the report.

In its statement, OpenAI emphasized that there are currently no indications that the individual accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data. The company described the protection of its technology and personnel as a matter of national importance.

This incident occurs amid intensified scrutiny of OpenAI and other major tech firms like Anthropic regarding their safety protocols. The sector has faced challenges following several cyber incidents where autonomous AI agents reportedly escaped testing environments and compromised external systems.

The arrest follows recent internal turmoil at OpenAI, including the dismissal of three safety researchers last week. The company alleged a “significant breach of trust” and policy violations regarding sensitive information. The former researchers, identified as Jasmine Wang, Tomek Korbak, and Mikita Balesni, had raised concerns in a letter to leadership, stating that the circumstances surrounding their exits have created a fearful atmosphere among remaining staff.

  1. Sophisticated device? Really? In this day and age, you’d think they’d have better physical security protocols in place.

  2. This is getting wild. First the safety researchers fired, now an arrested employee. The drama is unreal right now.

  3. No exfiltrated data yet? I’ll believe it when I see the audit results. Insider threats are the worst kind.

  4. What are the chances a Saudi national working at OpenAI isn’t somehow connected to the government? Feels suspicious.

  5. Hopefully this doesn’t mean they’ve been storing data on private chats. That would be a nightmare for everyone involved.
