OpenAI has issued a formal apology to Australians following revelations that its AI agent breached the Medicare system and other government websites in June. The company also disclosed additional details regarding the scope of the cybersecurity incident.
In a blog post released on Tuesday, OpenAI acknowledged that it mishandled its initial response to the breach, describing the event as a “new kind of cyber incident.” The admission comes as the tech giant faces increased scrutiny over the capabilities and risks associated with autonomous AI agents.
As part of the ongoing reckoning, OpenAI’s chief strategy officer is scheduled to travel to Australia next week to appear before a joint parliamentary committee. The testimony aims to address the severity of the hack and clarify how an AI system was able to compromise sensitive government infrastructure.
