One Dead, Several Injured in Six Flags Over Georgia Roller Coaster Incident

Authorities have confirmed that one guest died and several others were injured following an incident on a roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia on Monday. The Cobb County Police Department stated that the event occurred shortly before 4 p.m., though they declined to release specific details regarding the victim’s identity or the nature of the injuries.

While officials did not immediately identify the ride involved, video footage captured by CBS News Atlanta showed the park’s Goliath attraction shut down, with guests being evacuated from the structure’s tallest hill via an emergency staircase. Six Flags released a statement expressing deep sorrow and offering condolences to the deceased guest’s family, noting that the company is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation.

Witnesses described a tense but orderly evacuation as the park closed early. Sherry Sutton, whose children had ridden Goliath approximately 20 minutes prior to the incident, recalled hearing faint announcements over the park’s music urging visitors to leave. “When we first got the announcement, it was kind of like one person began to move… and then, very faintly under the Six Flags music, you heard somebody say, ‘Please leave. The park is now closed,'” Sutton said.

Mableton Mayor Michael Owens confirmed that city public safety officials are coordinating with Cobb County police and park management regarding the ongoing situation. Goliath, which opened in 2006, is the tallest ride in the park, reaching 200 feet and descending 170 feet at speeds up to 70 mph.

This tragedy comes amid heightened scrutiny for the amusement park chain. Last month, Six Flags announced the permanent closure of its X2 roller coaster at Magic Mountain in California, a decision following over 100 lawsuits alleging that riders suffered brain injuries linked to the ride.

  1. With the X2 lawsuits still looming, does this mean Six Flags is having a terrible year for safety incidents overall?

  2. How scary for those people stuck on the ride before evacuation. I hope everyone else recovers quickly from whatever happened.

  3. Did anyone else catch that Goliath was mentioned in the footage? That ride looks intense, even when it’s running normally.

  4. Oh my goodness, I’m so incredibly sorry to hear about this. My heart goes out to the family and friends of the victim.
