Former President Barack Obama has urged Democrats to prioritize artificial intelligence as a central policy agenda, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive strategy to address safety and economic implications. Speaking at a fundraising event on Thursday, Obama noted that the technology is advancing rapidly within private sectors and warned that failing to establish robust oversight could prove dangerous.
Obama, who was interviewed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, stated that upon regaining control of the House, Democrats should initiate a transparent framework for public discussion. He highlighted the potential benefits of AI, particularly in accelerating drug development and curing diseases, but stressed that proactive government involvement is essential to manage risks.
Jeffries echoed these sentiments in a statement, affirming that decisive action on AI is necessary. He further criticized the current Republican administration, arguing that they have abandoned their governing responsibilities regarding the American people. The former president also revealed that he has been serving as a consultant to major tech executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
These comments arise against a backdrop of heightened anxiety within the AI community. Recent concerns intensified after an Anthropic researcher resigned, alleging that leading companies are recklessly racing toward self-improving superintelligence. In response to such pressures, Amodei recently proposed a plan to pace the development of frontier AI, which includes granting independent safety evaluators access to models and establishing common safety standards across the industry.
Both Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk appeared to support Amodei’s proposal on social media, with Altman committing OpenAI to allowing independent evaluators employee-like access. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump addressed AI safety during a trip to Ireland, asserting that the United States remains the most sophisticated nation in the field. Trump emphasized his desire to maintain this dominance, stating, “whoever wins AI wins,” while acknowledging the need for guardrails despite dismissing some negative concerns.
This political debate follows earlier legislative efforts by the Trump administration, which released a framework earlier this year aiming to preempt state-level AI laws and shift child safety responsibilities onto parents. As the technology continues to evolve, the divide between private sector innovation and governmental regulation remains a focal point for policymakers.
