New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has condemned an incident in which an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a man in the Marble Hill neighborhood, calling the event “unconscionable and incredibly serious.” The shooting occurred early Thursday and involved a five-year-old child who was inside the vehicle at the time.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Mamdani reported that initial accounts suggest ICE agents surrounded the car before opening fire. He confirmed that the child was not physically injured but vowed to demand that President Donald Trump halt all ICE enforcement operations within the city. “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” Mamdani said, adding that he had already contacted the president.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described the incident as part of a “targeted enforcement operation” conducted in the Bronx around 4 p.m. According to DHS, officers were attempting to arrest a Dominican national with a prior criminal conviction when one officer discharged their weapon, injuring the suspect. The agency stated that the incident is currently under investigation.
A New York Police Department statement confirmed that the man is conscious and receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital. Footage from the scene showed protesters marching from the location of the shooting toward the hospital on October 8, 2026.
This incident adds to mounting scrutiny faced by ICE over the past several months. In January, federal agents killed two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis: Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother, and Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse. Following Good’s death, Trump administration officials labeled her a “domestic terrorist,” despite video evidence challenging claims that she had attempted to run over an agent.
As protests spread to hundreds of cities, the federal government removed local authorities from the investigation, declined requests for a civil rights probe, and deployed additional agents to Minnesota, bringing the total to 3,000. Trump attributed the shift in public opinion regarding the immigration agency to unfair media coverage and urged DHS and ICE to highlight the criminal records of those they arrest.
ICE has been assigned a goal of deporting one million people annually. The agency has doubled its workforce to more than 22,000 agents and has become the highest-funded federal law enforcement body, with approximately $75 billion allocated over four years under a tax bill signed by Trump last year.
Mayor Mamdani is right to demand answers. Communities cannot be treated with such disregard for human life.
Twenty-two thousand ICE agents and seventy-five billion dollars. That’s an enormous budget for what seems like chaos.
This reminds me of the Minneapolis case. The pattern of federal overreach is terrifying and needs to stop immediately.
We need to wait for the full investigation before calling it unconscionable. Agents face dangerous situations daily.
A five-year-old in the car during a shooting? This is absolutely horrifying. How does this even happen?
