NPR Revives College Podcast Challenge for 2026 Season

As the academic year begins, NPR is announcing the return of its College Podcast Challenge for 2026. Now in its sixth iteration, the competition invites students from campuses of all sizes to compete for a $5,000 grand prize, with finalists also eligible for $500 scholarships. The contest has previously drawn thousands of participants from all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Over the years, the initiative has showcased diverse storytelling, ranging from personal narratives to investigative journalism. Past notable entries include a Miami Dade College student’s account of living with a rare mental health condition, a Fordham University senior’s reflections on family illness, a Penn State freshman’s reporting on a young Cassius Clay, and a Colorado College student’s exploration of her biological father’s identity.

The competition stems from the NPR Student Podcast Challenge, which launched in 2018 for grades 4-12. This year, NPR is also introducing a Senior Podcast Challenge for participants aged 65 and older.

Entries must be audio stories no longer than eight minutes and must not contain copyrighted music. Organizers note that dozens of submissions are disqualified annually for rule violations, particularly regarding audio rights.

NPR editors have observed improved production quality and comfort with microphones among recent entrants. However, they caution against the overuse of sound effects and background music, which can distract from the narrative. Producers emphasize that fewer sound effects generally yield better results, and any music used must comply with strict originality requirements.

Additionally, participants are reminded to adhere to NPR’s journalistic ethics. The use of AI to write or produce any part of a submission is prohibited. Entrants are expected to present balanced viewpoints, seek comments from subjects, protect private details, and use full names where appropriate.

Students interested in participating can submit their work through the official NPR portal.
