Novo Nordisk Rebrands to ‘Novo’ in Strategic Shift to Combat Rivals

Novo Nordisk announced Monday that it is rebranding its corporate identity to simply “Novo,” marking a significant shift as the Danish pharmaceutical company seeks to reclaim momentum in the lucrative obesity treatment sector. The move is described as the start of a new chapter for the firm, which has come under pressure from investors to deliver fresh blockbuster drugs while contending with fierce rivalry from Eli Lilly.

The global brand campaign, centered on the slogan “Lasting Health Starts Now,” aims to connect more directly with patients and stakeholders by emphasizing immediate steps toward long-term well-being. According to the company, the initiative is designed to build public trust and bring scientific breakthroughs closer to everyday life.

Financially, the company faces headwinds despite some successes. Novo Nordisk shares have fallen approximately 15% this year, even as its oral version of Wegovy exceeded 3 million prescriptions by June. Furthermore, the firm recently cancelled three clinical trials for an experimental cardiovascular medication.

Data from a recent earnings presentation by Eli Lilly, citing IQVIA, highlights the disparity in the weight-loss drug market. Novo Nordisk holds a 38.8% market share compared to Lilly’s dominant 60.9% position in the second quarter. The oral Wegovy formulation previously held a first-mover advantage over Lilly’s competing weight-loss pill, Foundayo.

In addition to the naming change, the Copenhagen-based drugmaker unveiled a new four-point corporate culture framework intended to enhance performance and focus in a market increasingly driven by direct-to-consumer sales. The principles include prioritizing patient-centric innovation, raising performance standards to create stakeholder value, simplifying workflows through clearer priorities, and maintaining uncompromising standards for patient safety and ethics.

The legal name Novo Nordisk will remain in use, retaining its historical roots from the 1989 merger of Novo Terapeutisk Laboratorium and Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium. The company is scheduled to provide further details on its strategic business adjustments during its Capital Markets Day event on September 21.

  1. Oral formulations are the future of obesity treatment. If the new Wegovy pill works as well as injections, this pivot might just pay off.

  2. Did they really cancel three trials? That sounds risky. Rebranding is one thing, but slowing down R&D while losing market share is another matter entirely.

  3. As a patient, I love ‘Lasting Health Starts Now.’ It feels personal and hopeful. Hope the science keeps up with the slogan!

  4. Thirty-eight percent share against sixty-one is a tough hill to climb. The rebrand is nice, but they really need that next pipeline hit to win back investors.

  5. Simplifying the name feels bold. I wonder if a shorter brand actually helps in such a complex medical market against giants like Lilly?
