Northern Ireland thrash Ukraine to top Nations League group

Senior players have long cautioned against lingering on past glories, but Northern Ireland’s commanding 3-0 win over Ukraine in Slovakia suggests a future that could eclipse even the memories of Euro 2016. Manager Michael O’Neill’s decision to field his youngest starting lineup since the Second World War, with an average age of just 22, was vindicated in Trnava.

Ciaron Brown opened the scoring in the ninth minute, converting from a Ruairi McConville knockdown to claim his first two international goals. Nineteen-year-old Kieran Morrison made his first start and provided the assist for Isaac Price to double the advantage, before Brown added a third with a header that trickled past goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk.

The result joins Sweden and France as the only nations to have defeated Ukraine in the last 12 months. It also marked the team’s third consecutive clean sheet, highlighting the defensive solidity provided by Brown and his center-back partners. McConville, playing for Norwich City, and Blackburn Rovers’ Tom Atcheson, making his debut just six months ago, were praised for their composure.

“They have no ceiling, to be honest,” O’Neill told BBC Sport NI regarding his young defenders. “They are both playing in the Championship at the minute but they are ready to go to the next level.”

O’Neill was particularly relieved to see Brown mature into a leadership role in the absence of the injured Dan Ballard. “He brings a lot to the team. He was our most senior player tonight and he has really grown into that,” the manager said.

With four points from three games, Northern Ireland sits three points clear at the top of League B2. They now prepare to host Georgia, who currently sit bottom with one point, in their final match of the window on Monday. A win would secure automatic promotion to League A and place them in a five-team group for Euro 2028 qualification.
