Northern Ireland keep unbeaten Nations League start with 0-0 draw against Hungary

Northern Ireland maintained their unbeaten start in the UEFA Nations League after a goalless draw with Hungary at Windsor Park. The result means the home side sits jointly at the top of League B alongside Ukraine, having accumulated four points from their first two matches.

Manager Michael O’Neill expressed satisfaction with the outcome, describing the performance as ‘positive’ despite the lack of goals. He noted that his team were ‘more than a match’ for the opposition, who had lost their opening game to Ukraine. While praising the defensive effort, O’Neill acknowledged that the team struggled to create clear-cut chances, resulting in another clean sheet rather than a victory.

The match was characterized by strong defensive displays from both sides, with opportunities being scarce. Northern Ireland’s Patrick Kelly hit the crossbar in the first half, while Isaac Price saw an effort saved by Hungary’s Balazs Toth. Controversy arose when Shea Charles had a penalty appeal dismissed for an incident similar to one where Dan Ballard was penalized against Georgia earlier in the tournament. O’Neill humorously remarked that referees rarely head to the touchline for similar calls involving his team.

Although Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai threatened Hungary’s attack, his influence was largely neutralized. Northern Ireland goalkeeper Pierce Charles had to make only one save late in the game after a clearance led to a shot from Alex Toth. O’Neill noted that both teams appeared tired by the end of the match, partly due to the long travel for Northern Ireland’s previous fixture.

The manager also criticized some Hungarian players for what he perceived as excessive simulation on the pitch, which contributed to a stop-start flow of the game. Four Northern Ireland players—Ethan Galbraith, Shea Charles, Jamie Donley, and Isaac Price—received yellow cards in a match refereed by Ricardo de Burgos. O’Neill urged officials to speed up the game to eliminate such antics.

With eight clean sheets kept in their last ten home matches, Northern Ireland will next face Ukraine in Slovakia on Friday. O’Neill remains optimistic about the team’s campaign, calling it a ‘great start’ in a competitive group where all teams appear well matched.
