NFTS and Sean Connery Foundation to Launch Permanent Edinburgh Institute

The UK’s National Film and Television School (NFTS) has announced a partnership with the Sean Connery Foundation to create a new filmmaking hub in Edinburgh, slated for launch in 2027. The NFTS Sean Connery Institute aims to consolidate and expand the school’s existing operations in Scotland under a single organization.

According to the institute’s mission statement, the initiative is dedicated to identifying and nurturing the next generation of Scottish film and television professionals, helping them establish sustainable careers. The project seeks to amplify Scotland’s diverse storytelling voices on both national and global stages.

Set to open in central Edinburgh within the next 18 months, the facility will house the NFTS’s training programs while also offering a regular public schedule that includes film screenings, masterclasses, and industry events.

The establishment of the institute follows nine years of NFTS activity in Scotland, previously operated under the NFTS Scotland banner. It builds upon the success of the Sean Connery Talent Lab, a flagship training program launched in 2023 in collaboration with the Sean Connery Foundation, BBC Film, and various partners. The lab, led by Scottish producer Chris Young, is an intensive year-long development course for emerging writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, and editors.

Currently in its third cohort, the Talent Lab has supported 75 filmmakers since its inception, providing workshops, mentoring, and practical experience. To date, 12 films produced through the program have been selected for consecutive world premieres at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2025 and 2026.

Jon Wardle, director of the National Film and Television School, described the move as a significant milestone. “Nine years ago, our work in Scotland began with a relatively simple ambition: to bring the NFTS’ world-class training closer to Scotland’s screen industry and respond to its skills needs,” Wardle said. “Since then, thousands of people have been trained and we have seen first-hand the depth of talent that exists across the country.”

He added, “By establishing a permanent home in Edinburgh, we are putting down roots and making a long-term commitment to help Scotland’s emerging talent build lasting careers.”

Jason and Stephane Connery spoke on behalf of the Sean Connery Foundation, highlighting their father’s values. “Our father believed deeply in fairness, hard work and supporting talented people in need,” they said. “He understood that while talent may be distributed equally, opportunity is not, and that those who demonstrate determination and endeavour should have the chance to fulfil their potential.”

The Connery siblings noted that their father was immensely proud of his Scottish heritage and expressed confidence that he would be pleased by the deepening partnership with his hometown of Edinburgh.
