Netflix has officially confirmed that a third Inbetweeners film is in development, with the original lead cast set to return. Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley, and Blake Harrison are all reprising their iconic roles for the upcoming feature, with production scheduled to begin on Monday.
The new movie continues the story of Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland, and Simon Cooper. The group originally gained fame starring in the hit E4 sitcom that ran from 2008 to 2010, which chronicled the chaotic lives of suburban teenagers at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive.
The announcement follows months of speculation regarding a potential third film. Alongside the news, Netflix released a teaser video showing the quartet reuniting in their signature yellow Fiat. In the clip, the friends squeeze into the small car, and after Simon struggles to start the engine, they drive out of what appears to be a storage unit.
Creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris will return to write and direct the project. In a statement, they expressed their enjoyment of reuniting with the cast, adding, “We’re going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans.」
The franchise previously saw two Film4-backed sequels release in 2011 and 2014. The first film followed the group on a post-sixth-form trip to Crete, while the second saw Will, Simon, and Neil travel to Australia to visit Jay during his gap year, discovering his lifestyle was not as luxurious as he had portrayed.
Both previous films broke box office records, with the inaugural movie holding the distinction of being the biggest opening weekend for a UK comedy at the time of its release. While the leads are confirmed, details regarding supporting cast members, such as Emily Atack or Emily Head, have not yet been announced.
Please tell me Emily Atack is coming back. The stories wouldn’t be complete without her!
Where exactly is this storage unit? I’d love to visit for a proper pilgrimage to Rudge Park!
I loved the first two, but I’m worried Netflix might ruin the original magic with their usual changes.
No problemos here! Finally, the reunion we’ve been waiting for since 2014. Let’s go!
