The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a distinguished South African jurist who previously served as the United Nations high commissioner for human rights. Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, cited her tireless efforts to advance peace and uphold international law as the basis for the honor.
Frydnes highlighted Pillay’s unwavering dedication to universal legal standards and her strong ethical foundation throughout her career. Born into an Indian Tamil family under the apartheid regime in Durban, South Africa, Pillay rose to become a legal pioneer who challenged deep-seated structural discrimination, segregation, and exclusion.
According to the committee, a consistent theme connects her early work defending Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists to her later tenure as a judge in pivotal international court cases. The announcement marks a significant recognition of her contributions to global justice over decades of service.
