A recent satellite image from NASA has revealed the real-world location behind one of television’s most famous alien encounters. The photo captures Vasquez Rocks Natural Area County Park in southern California, where Captain Kirk famously battled the Gorn in the original Star Trek series.
The image, produced by the NASA Earth Observatory using data from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) aboard the Landsat 9 satellite, showcases the region’s diverse geology and vegetation. Rendered in shortwave-infrared and near-infrared wavelengths, the false-color view highlights variations across the landscape surrounding the 25-million-year-old rock formations.
Vasquez Rocks is renowned for its towering, sun-bleached boulders and arid terrain, features that have made it a favorite backdrop for science fiction and western productions for decades. Beyond its role as the set for Metron in Star Trek, the site doubled as Vulcan in films such as Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and the 2009 reboot. It has also appeared in major productions including Galaxy Quest, Battlestar Galactica, and Planet of the Apes.
The imagery underscores how distinctively alien landscapes on Earth can serve as stand-ins for distant worlds, proving that authentic extraterrestrial settings are accessible without leaving the planet.
