NASA Crew-13 Launches to ISS Aboard SpaceX Dragon Despite Weather Concerns

SpaceX successfully launched the Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station on Friday, lifting off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The launch proceeded despite earlier concerns regarding thunderstorms and strong winds, carrying four astronauts on a journey that will last approximately six months.

The crew departed atop a Falcon 9 rocket, which ascended over the Atlantic Ocean before the Crew Dragon capsule, named Grace, began its eight-hour journey to rendezvous with the orbital outpost.

The team consists of NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov. Watkins, a geologist, is on her second spaceflight, having previously served on the Crew-4 mission in 2022. She holds the record for the most time in space by a Black woman and was the first Black woman to serve on the station. Delaney, a naval aviator and native of DeBary, Florida, is making his debut in space.

Before his departure, Delaney noted that he grew up watching Space Shuttle launches from near the Space Coast and looks forward to seeing them from a new perspective. Students at his former high school, Deltona High, celebrated the occasion by declaring it “Luke Delaney Day” as they watched the launch.

Kutryk and Teteryatnikov are both flying in space for the first time. They join the mission as part of an international partnership that continues despite geopolitical tensions.

The spacecraft they are riding, Grace, is the fifth and final Crew Dragon built by SpaceX. Prior to this mission, the capsule ferried four private astronauts to the ISS during the Axiom Ax-4 mission.

The mission patch incorporates design elements paying homage to Apollo 13, reflecting the ingenuity and bravery displayed during that famous 1970 mission. NASA’s Dana Weigel praised the crew for acknowledging the historical significance, noting that the design represents what can be achieved when facing extremely challenging circumstances.

  1. Wait, is this a new designation or did I miss previous missions? What exactly is Crew-13 in the overall timeline?

  2. It is wonderful to see international cooperation continuing smoothly. Four astronauts from different nations working together is truly inspiring.

  3. Is it weird that I’m more excited about the final Crew Dragon variant than the mission itself? Grace has quite a legacy.

  4. I held my breath during the thunderstorm delay. So relieved to see Grace launch safely despite the weather concerns!
