Twenty-five years after disrupting the music industry, Napster is pivoting once again, this time targeting the education sector. The company has announced a strategic partnership with Gems Education in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to develop AI agents and digital personas designed to support teachers and students.
This new venture marks a significant departure from Napster’s original 1999 incarnation as a peer-to-peer file-sharing service that upended the entertainment industry. After shutting down its music platform in 2001 following copyright litigation, the brand underwent several transformations, most recently operating as a music-streaming service until it was acquired by Florida-based tech firm Infinite Reality in 2025 for $207 million.
In early 2026, Napster abruptly ended its streaming operations to rebrand as an artificial intelligence platform. As part of this shift, Samuel Huber, formerly the CEO of UK-based technology company Landvault, was appointed to lead Napster’s Middle East and Africa division. Huber, whose previous company was acquired by Infinite Reality in 2024, frames the new initiative as a continuation of the company’s original ethos.
“The name has always been about giving power to the users,” Huber stated. “Twenty-five years ago, it was about music and how music should be owned by people, not the gatekeepers. And now this is the same fight, the same ethos, but it’s about data and intelligence.”
Under the collaboration with Gems Education, Napster will focus on proof-of-concept projects including the digitization of instructors, gamified learning, AI-assisted content creation, and classroom simulations. The initial phase will take place at the Gems School of Research and Innovation, utilizing the Gems Global Education AI Hub and the Gems Intelligence 360 platform as a testing ground.
A central component of the project involves creating “digital twins” of educators. Trained on a teacher’s course materials, papers, and lectures, these AI-driven avatars will be available online around the clock. Students can interact with them outside of school hours to ask questions and refine their understanding at their own pace, while teachers gain insights into student inquiries and areas requiring additional support.
Huber emphasized that the goal is to make AI interactions feel more natural, utilizing voice and video to position these agents as collaborative coworkers rather than mere tools. He also addressed privacy concerns, noting that student data will remain within the country and can be hosted on dedicated servers. Furthermore, he confirmed that Napster does not utilize user data to train its AI models.
According to Huber, the technology is intended to extend the capabilities of educators without replacing the human relationships that are fundamental to the educational process.
