The U.S. Department of Defense has announced a new initiative designed to pinpoint the technological requirements for future combat scenarios. Titled Project Meridian, the effort aims to analyze upcoming battlefields, determine which weapons and technologies are necessary for dominance, and propose practical steps for developing, testing, and deploying these capabilities. According to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the goal is to ensure American military overmatch throughout the 21st century and beyond.
The commission will be headed by Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. As noted by CNBC, none of the three have prior military service. However, both Musk’s SpaceX AI and Luckey’s Anduril currently hold Pentagon contracts valued at up to $4.16 billion. Gingrich, who lacks direct ties to the tech industry, has previously worked on military-adjacent projects and received an honorary doctorate from Air University last year.
The appointment comes amid scrutiny of the Defense Department’s recent handling of sensitive information. This calendar year alone has seen classified war plans leaked to a journalist via Signal, a near-international incident caused by reliance on an AI-generated report, and a court ruling declaring the Pentagon’s designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk as illegal.
While the military may benefit from external guidance given these controversies, critics argue that Project Meridian may serve less as a neutral advisory body and more as a mechanism to funnel additional power and funding to associates of the current administration.
Anduril and SpaceX already hold massive contracts. This looks like a gift to donors disguised as innovation.
Wait, none of them have military experience? That’s a bold choice for shaping national defense policy.
Can a civilian really advise on future warfare? I hope they consult actual strategists, not just tech billionaires.
Funneling billions to friends while the Pentagon leaks secrets via Signal. The timing feels deeply suspicious.
