While Pokémon Champions now allows players to enter competitive battles via their smartphones, achieving the highest level of play at the Pokémon World Championships still mandates the use of a Nintendo Switch.
Originally released for the Switch and Switch 2 in April, the mobile iteration launched this past June. The two versions offer nearly identical experiences, with full cross-platform support meaning the decision to play on a phone or console largely depends on hardware ownership and input preference.
Despite the parity between platforms, no clear rationale currently exists for maintaining the Switch requirement at elite-level tournaments, even as the mobile version expands access to the broader community.
