Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell returned to the Capitol on Monday to cast his first vote since June, ending a prolonged absence caused by a fall that required hospitalization. The Kentucky Republican addressed his reappearance via a post on X, stating he was eager to be back on the floor among his colleagues.
The 84-year-old legislator acknowledged that his rehabilitation has been arduous, noting that residual effects from childhood polio have complicated his healing. While admitting he is not yet fully recovered, McConnell assured Senate Majority Leader John Thune that he will attend difficult votes as he continues physical therapy under medical supervision.
McConnell’s return follows weeks of uncertainty and public speculation regarding his condition. His office initially provided minimal details when he was admitted to the hospital on June 14. In July, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear publicly requested a health update, noting he had received no response.
Subsequent disclosures revealed that McConnell had briefly lost consciousness after the fall and later treated a mild case of pneumonia. He explicitly refuted rumors of severe injury, with doctors confirming he suffered no broken bones, concussions, tumors, or heart attacks. By late July, officials stated he had been discharged from the hospital but remained at a rehabilitation center. He was released from that facility on August 6 to continue his recovery at home.
McConnell, who has experienced multiple falls in recent years, is scheduled to retire in January when his current term concludes.
