Amid growing concerns regarding access to high-end artificial intelligence, French technology company Mistral has introduced a new open-access model that it asserts can stand toe-to-toe with leading systems from the United States and China.
Officially designated as Mistral Large 4 but affectionately dubbed “Le Chonk,” the 1 trillion-parameter model is currently available in a preview stage, with a finalized release slated for later this month. While designed to compete in general-purpose applications, the model has been specifically fine-tuned for software development, cyberdefense, and specialized sectors including manufacturing, finance, and electrical engineering.
Guillaume Lample, Mistral’s cofounder and chief scientist, highlighted the strategic focus on under-served areas. In an interview with WIRED, he noted that other major research laboratories often overlook specific domains, presenting an opportunity to significantly enhance model performance across a wider range of specialized tasks.
