Mistral AI Secures $3.5 Billion in Funding Led by Samsung, Valued at $24 Billion

Mistral AI, the Paris-based artificial intelligence startup, has raised 3 billion euros ($3.5 billion) in a new funding round led by South Korean electronics giant Samsung. The investment round also featured participation from the Scaleup Europe Fund, an EU-backed vehicle managed by EQT, and existing backer PSG Equity. Following the transaction, the company’s post-money valuation exceeds 21 billion euros, a significant increase from the 11.7 billion euro appraisal it held just over a year ago.

Arthur Mensch, Mistral’s founder and CEO, indicated that the capital will be directed toward expanding the company’s physical and computational infrastructure, including the construction of proprietary data centers. During an interview with CNBC, Mensch outlined a strategy to double their owned compute capacity over the next five years, stating, “Long term, the plan is to fully rely on capacity that we are building ourselves.” He added that the company intends to train larger and faster models as part of this expansion.

The funding underscores Mistral’s ambition to position itself as the primary European alternative to dominant U.S. firms like OpenAI and Anthropic. Unlike its competitors, which often rely on closed, proprietary systems, Mistral is focusing on open-weight AI models. This approach aligns with the growing European demand for “sovereign AI,” a sector supported by investors such as the European Commission, Novo Holdings, and Santander through the Scaleup Europe Fund.

Mensch highlighted a strategic parallel between Mistral’s partnerships and its technological integration. The company already integrates AI into the manufacturing processes of ASML, the Dutch semiconductor equipment maker. With Samsung now leading the investment, Mensch expects a similar collaborative model to emerge with the South Korean conglomerate.

Addressing the competitive landscape, Mensch acknowledged the emergence of highly capable Chinese AI labs but argued that they lack enterprise presence outside of China. He noted that while Chinese models can sometimes be deployed on Mistral’s infrastructure, the arrangement does not create strong dependencies, as data remains within Mistral’s control. He cited concerns over potential export restrictions and the unpredictability of long-term support for Chinese models as key reasons European companies prefer local partners.

Financially, the outlook remains positive. Earlier this year, Mensch projected that annual recurring revenue would surpass $1 billion in 2026. With the fresh capital and strengthened partnerships, he expressed confidence that Mistral would exceed that target, noting, “We’re very confident that the fundraising we are doing today is also accelerating and enabling further growth down the line in 2027.” When asked for a revised figure, he declined to provide specific numbers but pointed to positive trends.

5 responses to “Mistral AI Secures $3.5 Billion in Funding Led by Samsung, Valued at $24 Billion”

  1. The EU backing through Scaleup Europe Fund shows this isn’t just corporate vanity—it’s strategic autonomy. Smart money follows where policy points.

  2. Love that Mistral is sticking to open-weight models. It keeps the ecosystem competitive and gives developers real freedom compared to closed black boxes.

  3. Twenty-four billion? Seems steep. Let’s see if they can actually deliver on that $1B revenue goal without burning cash on new data centers.

  4. Finally, a serious sovereign AI alternative! Data sovereignty matters, and keeping infrastructure in Europe is the right call for privacy-conscious companies.

  5. Samsung betting big on European AI is a bold move. Curious how the proprietary infrastructure strategy plays out against OpenAI’s cloud dominance.
