Mighty Sparrow, the ‘Greatest Calypsonian,’ Dies at 91

Mighty Sparrow, the Trinidadian singer and songwriter widely regarded as the greatest calypsonian to ever live, has died at the age of 91.

For roughly half a century, he stood as a monumental figure in Caribbean music, winning over millions of fans globally with his original compositions. His work represented the definitive calypso blend, combining sharp political commentary with humor, sexual innuendo, and memorable melody.

Among Trinidadians, he was cherished and celebrated more than any other public figure in the island’s history, often compared to Bob Marley’s status in reggae as an inspirational living legend.
