Microsoft has announced the return of its Surface Mouse, reintroducing a classic peripheral that was discontinued in 2023. The new device, priced at $80, will be available in stores starting October 13, marking the first release of this iconic mouse since its original launch in 2016.
The updated model introduces haptic feedback, providing subtle tactile sensations during screen clicks, window snapping, and object alignment. While the company positions the customizable action button as a tool for Copilot integration, users can reprogram it for other functions using the Surface app, which is preinstalled on Surface laptops and available via the Microsoft Store for Windows PCs.
Although the mouse features a redesigned ambidextrous shape suitable for both left- and right-handed users, customization options remain limited compared to competitors; users cannot assign distinct actions to the button on a per-app basis. Connectivity is handled by Bluetooth 6.0, allowing seamless switching between paired devices.
Environmentally, the new mouse incorporates 30% recycled plastic. Its release follows a period where Microsoft ended its direct keyboard and mouse production line, forcing fans to rely on third-party manufacturers or secondhand markets like eBay for legacy products such as the IntelliMouse.
