Meta is reportedly preparing to unveil a new line of smart glasses that omits cameras entirely, a strategic move aimed at alleviating public relations challenges associated with its current flagship product. According to a report from The Information, the device—internally codenamed Luna—may be announced during the upcoming Meta Connect event scheduled for next week.
Unlike the company’s existing Ray-Ban Meta glasses, the Luna model will not feature video recording capabilities. Instead, it will be equipped with six microphones designed to facilitate interactions with Meta AI and a forthcoming AI agent known as Muse. Audio playback will be handled via integrated speakers.
The decision to remove the camera has allowed engineers to reduce the size of the glasses’ temples, bringing the overall aesthetic closer to traditional eyewear frames. This design shift appears to be a direct response to user privacy complaints and backlash regarding the surveillance capabilities of the current camera-equipped models.
Interesting pivot. But if they still track location and voice, are we really any safer?
