Meta’s legal team has sought to keep specific documents out of public view by claiming attorney-client privilege in several lawsuits alleging the company caused harm to teenagers’ mental health. However, attorneys representing the plaintiffs contend this privilege is being invoked excessively, citing internal communications and merchandise orders that suggest a pattern of obfuscation.
According to a recently unsealed court document, members of the team responsible for launching Instagram’s Teen Accounts in 2024 placed an order for baseball caps emblazoned with the abbreviation “a/c priv.” The team, internally known as Project Nido, was reportedly using the imagery as part of their group identity.
Plaintiff lawyers argue that the existence of such swag reflects a broader “culture of privilege abuse” within Meta. They assert that the company routinely misuses attorney-client privilege to shield evidence related to its internal discussions on teen safety from public scrutiny and legal discovery.
