Meta Introduces AI Agents to Streamline WhatsApp Business Setup

Alongside the rollout of new AI-centric subscription plans, Meta announced on Tuesday that it will enable third-party AI agents to manage WhatsApp Business messaging configurations. The update aims to reduce the technical friction previously associated with connecting companies to the platform’s conversation tools.

Previously, developers were required to navigate a fragmented workflow involving multiple interfaces, including the Developer Console, Meta’s Business Manager, API documentation, and their own code editors. Under the new system, users can simply instruct their preferred AI agent—such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT—through a conversational interface to handle these tasks.

This capability is powered by the newly launched WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that integrates directly with the WhatsApp Business Platform. This move expands Meta’s existing portfolio of MCP servers, which currently support ad management, app configuration monitoring, and other social technology functions.

Competitors in the tech sector have also begun offering similar MCP solutions to facilitate secure AI interactions with their services. Notable examples include PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft, all of whom are developing protocols to make their platforms more accessible to AI tools.

By leveraging the new Meta server, AI agents can automate significant portions of the onboarding process. These duties include creating WhatsApp Business accounts, adding and verifying phone numbers, registering for Cloud API access, and reviewing Terms of Service compliance.

Beyond initial setup, businesses can utilize the agents for ongoing operational tasks. These include drafting or modifying messaging templates, testing webhooks, and monitoring critical account health metrics that might otherwise go unnoticed, such as payment method validity and business verification status.

Additionally, during the configuration phase, developers can use Meta’s existing Meta Social Technologies MCP server. This tool assists in locating API endpoints, searching through documentation, and diagnosing errors, providing a comprehensive support structure for AI-driven workflow automation.
