Meta is currently engineering a new line of smart glasses that omits the camera component found in its existing products, with shipments potentially beginning as early as October. According to a report by The Information, the company intends to introduce the device, internally codenamed Luna, during its Connect developer conference scheduled for September 23 and 24.
The upcoming eyewear will be available in two distinct frames: Clubmaster and Burbank. Although the devices lack cameras, they will feature six integrated microphones and speakers directed toward the user’s ears, facilitating voice interaction with Meta’s AI assistant. A physical button on the side of the frame will allow for quick activation of Meta AI, while the slimmer temples are designed to give the glasses the appearance of standard eyewear.
This strategic pivot comes as Meta faces significant public scrutiny regarding its current smart glasses, which critics have labeled “pervert glasses” due to fears of secret recording and harassment. While the company has implemented anti-creep features, such as blinking LED indicators during recording, past vulnerabilities allowed users to tamper with these lights or cover them after recording began—loopholes Meta has since patched through software updates.
Despite strong sales figures for its existing models, the negative reputation surrounding privacy violations has reportedly deterred potential buyers. Meta is betting that the camera-free Luna glasses will encourage hesitant consumers to finally adopt the technology.
