Mental Health Review Head Rejects ‘Snowflake’ Label as Youth Distress Rises

Prof Peter Fonagy, who leads an independent review into mental health, ADHD, and autism, has firmly rejected accusations that young people today belong to a “snowflake generation.” He told the BBC that these claims are incorrect and pointed to a genuine surge in psychological distress among children and adolescents.

According to Prof Fonagy, anxiety, depression, self-harm, and eating disorders represent the most prevalent issues currently affecting young people. His comments come in the context of a review commissioned nine months ago by Wes Streeting, who at the time served as health secretary.

Streeting originally ordered the inquiry after expressing concern during an interview that young individuals were being over-diagnosed and subsequently written off by society. However, the findings from Prof Fonagy’s review align with observations made by young mental health ambassadors, who spoke with the BBC’s Catherine Burns.

These ambassadors echoed the report’s conclusions, emphasizing that the challenges faced by youth are real and calling for expanded mental health support services rather than dismissal of their experiences.

  1. It’s refreshing to see evidence-based leadership rejecting slang insults in favor of addressing real, documented mental health crises.

  2. Interesting that the health secretary wanted to curb over-diagnosis while the findings confirm rising distress. Hypocrisy?
